The Industrial Relations Center's PhD in Human Resources and Industrial Relations is a rigorous doctoral program that prepares students for academic careers as teachers and researchers. Along with the resources of one of the country's largest universities, the PhD program gives students an opportunity to study with an internationally renowned faculty committed to providing each student with a rich educational experience.


Preparing foran academic career

Most students complete the degree in 4 years, although those without any previous graduate coursework often take an extra year. The program includes 2 - 2.5 years of coursework, seminars, and preliminary examinations and 1 - 2 years of dissertation work.

Each year, 3 - 4 new PhD students from a wide range of backgrounds enroll in the HRIR program. Students come from across the US and around the world and can apply for admission directly from an undergraduate program in the social sciences or after completing a master's degree in a basic or applied social science.
